As the economy slumps, more and more people are discovering their local library and all it has to offer. Whether you want to learn new job skills, need a place to entertain your kids, or are searching to lose yourself in the latest hot book or video, your local library branch likely has something for you.

Library Systems throughout the country are getting creative to entice visitors. In Voorhees, NJ, the library offers a Superhero Smackdown to delight the little ones. Kids can come dressed as their favorite superhero and can make a cape and a mask. Talk to your local branch to find out if they have a similar program. This particular library has also opened a center aimed solely at teens with state of the art electronic equipment, graffiti walls, and diner style seating. Other libraries are wooing teens with lock-in nights in which they spend the night in the library listening to music, playing video games, munching on snacks, and enjoying their friends.

Of course, there are always reading hours for kids, and other unique programs that local libraries have to offer. Not only will you be able to find a free, enjoyable activity to do with your kids, but you can get them excited about books and literature, and start them on the road to reading. Most libraries also offer playgroups where you can meet other parents with kids your children’s ages. It’s a great way for your kids to make friends, and enjoy new experiences.

Riletta L. Cream, Camden County NJ Freeholder, has always been a champion of libraries. “Now, libraries have changed a great deal,” she explains. “They are great places for people to meet and engage in conversation. It’s not the very quiet place that it used to be one hundred years ago when you couldn’t even whisper. It’s a vital part of a community.”

Libraries offer programs for all ages, from advice on finding a new job to help filling out a college financial aid form. So be sure to check out your local library with the entire family. You are sure to find something for everyone.

A bit about myself: I produced the Romper Room and Friends TV show and Bowling for Dollars when I worked for Claster Television in the ’80’s and ’90’s. With three kids of my own, I stopped working there in 1996. Today I am a freelance writer and preschool teacher and I am in the process of publishing my first book about preschool advice for parents. Please check out my blog at http://www.preschoolteach.blogspot.com

You can qualify for many interesting and respected professions with a degree in Library Science. Library Science degree programs are designed for future librarians to learn diverse occupations that can range from information technician to research librarian to college professor.

There are many colleges and universities across the US and Canada that provide degree programs for people who love books, language and information retrieval. Today’s librarians are expected to be well-versed in not only literature and reference materials, but also various forms of media including CDs, DVDs, websites, visual arts, information technology, and information databases. Certificates, diplomas and undergraduate degrees offer a broad overview of a multitude of topics to qualify for library technician positions. Degree options would include the Associate degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts with an emphasis on Library Science.

Advanced degree programs are usually focused on one specific area of media; in fact librarians are often given the title of media specialists. Graduate students may opt to achieve diplomas such as Master of Library Science (MLS). Those who aspire to a career in research or library administration may enter the top of the field with Doctorate Degrees in Library and Information Science.

The certified librarian is expected to have a Master Degree. Graduate degree programs allow students to focus on a specialty of interest, such as children’s literature, library administration, medical literature, art history, or information technology, just to name a few. The choice of emphasis is up to the taste and professional goals of the individual student.

Undergraduate degrees and diplomas may suffice for entry-level positions, such as library aide; however a degree in Library Science is required for positions of authority. Once you have determined your ultimate goal, you will be able to begin the academic path to success. For instance, if you simply want to learn to be a library technician or media aide, you may be able to achieve it in two years or less with certification or an Associate Degree in Library Technology. However, if your greatest desire is to become the director of a huge university library, you will most likely be required to have a PhD in Library and Information Science.

Take some time to assess your ultimate goal for the future and investigate which degrees you will need to get there.

Imagine a time when you could get any audio book you want to read from the library without having to physically visit the library to lend the audio books.

Well, imagine no more because it is now possible.

Public libraries from New York City to Alameda, California are now leading the packs of libraries that have begun allowing members to download audio books which they can listen to on their Personal Computers or portal audio book players such as PDAs — all from the comfort of their homes or offices.

From Tom Clancy’s techno-thrillers, Arabic, Spanish, French tutorials to as many titles as possible, librarians can now enjoy the best of audio books without having to leave their homes or offices.

What better way for libraries to stay needed and relevant in the new digital age than this?

With the Internet, many people are beginning to lose interest in the libraries, but this move will help the libraries to retain their memberships.

When asked what prompted this development, Barbara Nichols Randal, the director of the Guilderland Public Library in suburban Albany, explained that they took the needs of their younger readers and other people that were too busy to visit the library into consideration before coming up with this move.

Specifically, she said, “This is a way for us to have library access 24/7″.

For example, the Madison Public Library has access to a subscription database of audio book content. It provides this service for people who want to access this information from the comfort of their homes or offices, without having to physically visit the library.

The name of this subscription database of audio book content is OverDrive.

Anyone that has a LINK library card and access to the Internet can benefit from using OverDrive.

Note that while some of the libraries allow you to download and even copy their audio books into your PC and/or other portable CD or MP3 players, others don’t.

With those that do not allow downloading or burning of their audio books, you will only be able to read them on your computer… while being connected to the Internet.

Whichever service or library you prefer, the point is that you can benefit from the audio book without leaving the comfort of your home or office.

Take the time to search for the particular library that you prefer and register with them. Some of them offer free registration for particular periods of time, while others charge a token fee to access their database of audio books.

***Visit OdioMall.com for over 5,000 Downloadable Audios.***

What a brilliant resource we all have access to – our local library. There over 50 libraries in Surrey offering not only books, DVDs, CDs, etc on loan but computer/internet access, rooms to hire and because it is a focal point for the community there is a lot of community information on display. In addition, some Surrey libraries are specialist libraries and hold collections; such as the Surrey History Centre at Woking that collects and rescues archive material relating to Surrey’s past.

Though some audio/visual items may be subject to a small hire charge, the wealth of books which are normally on loan for 21 days are free. You can even take out up to 18 books in one time or a maximum of 6 audio-visual items. Amazingly, you can renew your books up 15 times before returning them back. Unfortunately, the renewal on audio-visual is subject to additional hire charges. There is even a voluntary service where books can be delivered to your home for those who are housebound. There are 5 mobile libraries also servicing the surrey areas.

Surrey libraries also run Author events whereby authors come along to the library and discuss their latest book. Authors for 2010 include Martin Bell, Vince Cable MP and “Who Do You Think You Are?” best-seller Dan Waddell.

Getting online is available at all libraries and anyone who is a member can have access up to 2 hours free in any one day. Thereafter, there is a charge of £3 for an additional 2 hours and non-members can pay this fee for usage too. Some libraries in the county have various items of equipment that assist those with disabilities to use computers. This can be large flat monitors, large keyboards, software that allows text that is shown on the screen to be heard, and adjustable tables for wheelchair access. Guildford library is one of the 15 libraries in the county that offer these facilities.

Guildford library, like other Surrey libraries, also has a regular Friday afternoon storytime slot, a baby bounce and rhyme slot on Tuesday mornings and a monthly slot for “Blokes and Babies”.

Town libraries house tens of thousands of books, in relatively convenient locations not far from my home or yours. The New York Public Library system offers about 60 million items (books, videotapes, maps, etc.), over 20 million of these are books. That’s a lot of items which requires a substantial brick and mortar infrastructure and associated staff (counting inventory must be a killer!). According to Wikipedia, “Due to the current 2009 economic crisis, NYPL is facing a $23.2 million funding cut when the new fiscal year begins July 1. This will result in the expected elimination of 465 jobs, and in sharply scaled back branch operating hours.” That’s what happens when your budget exceeds $300 million dollars each year and the city and state government is running at a deficit.

But there is a solution. As all of this printed material and video morphs to digital, why would we need these items to reside in a physical library? Does the model make sense anymore? Will continued pressure on government to reduce expenses change the way we think about and use libraries? Are libraries, like the US Post Office, relics of a bygone era that need to be completely reassessed and modernized? Could we take a fraction of this expense and provide every student in America a Kindle or iPad?

I think libraries will need to transform themselves to remain useful and affordable. Perhaps they will have a few dozen (or even a few hundred) workstations with PCs for people who need to find an online resource, though wireless reading devices with Internet connectivity may become so cheap in the future that literally everyone in a highly developed country will have one. Librarians are likely to become virtual librarians, with a touch of a button they appear on your screen allowing for an instant video chat (that’s already available on line with many major libraries). Surely they will not be needed to sort and stack books, to send out late notices, to collect late fees and organize used book sales. Perhaps libraries will house old books no longer in print, maps and plans that are difficult to digitize, and local historical artifacts for the town, city or region. Some day in the very near future, libraries may become a combination of a library and local museum. I’ll call them “Liseums.” Liseums would integrate local museums with library functions, combining town (or city) historical society museums with libraries, reducing brick and mortar overhead and the associated costs.

Libraries must change to become practical in the future. They will need to become nationally centralized and online database centric. While researching my recent book, I stopped by my local library to ask a librarian a question. I met Jen in the reference section, and she was very helpful. She subsequently e-mailed me some articles pertaining to regional and national commuting statistics. Of course, if my local (or regional) library was more of an online resource, I could have accomplished the same thing faster and more efficiently through a video chat, web meeting or instant messaging session. In the very near future, I would hope to see my Kindle support online web meetings, Skype type video calling, and library download functionality. I can already download many classic books for free, why not download any book from a library for free (yes I realize that will then create author royalty concerns – but that’s a subject for another day)? Regardless of your perspective on this, I suggest you look for a Liseum near you, sometime in the very near future.

There are public library users of all levels: avid, frequent, sporadic, and absent. This article is for those who forget to use their local library system or don’t even have a library card. It is especially for those who have children or who want to be or are in business.

Public libraries are a treasure trove of free, already paid for, information and entertainment services. Here are some benefits that hopefully will rouse you to visit your public library to get a card if you don’t have one and to remember to use it. At a public library you can find:

1. Information on most any subject. If your library doesn’t have the book or material you need, it can bring it in for you from another library in the same system, or it may participate in a broader lending system.

2. Entertainment in the form of music CDs, cassettes, and movie DVDs. Recorded books make travel fly by, especially long driving trips.

3. Children’s entertainment and preparation for school learning through regular story time sessions and other special events provided for young children. These are especially valuable before and during the preschool years.

4. Motivating reading and writing programs for young people and adults. Book clubs/discussion groups, contests, and personal reading challenges (quantity and variety) occur throughout the year.

5. Special classes on a wide array of topics for business learning or personal growth in areas of special interests.

6. Resource librarians who can help search out the answers to your questions-your own personal advisers.

7. Meeting rooms for start-up businesses or for any need to meet with others to study or share information.

8. Materials to boost your career or business knowledge. How-to books can save real dollars over purchasing the advice and save time in not having to figure something out the hard way-on your own. A self-help book helped me prepare a case for small claims court. I felt completely organized and ready to present my case to the magistrate, and I won. The other party was unprepared and very weak.

9. Displays of artwork, historical pieces, and other subjects of interest.

10. A setting where manners and comfortable protocol still reign. In our chaotic world, libraries are still places of calm and respite. Librarians share knowledge freely and kindly.

Add words like free, no-charge, or complimentary to each of these ten items, and you will quickly see how much money you can save on an on-going basis by using this service you are entitled to use.

Libraries are gifts we give ourselves and our children. Libraries are community assets that give tirelessly for a small amount of tax money. Resolve to take your children and yourself much more often to your local library. If you have never been, go this week. Start and maintain a habit that will contribute to your well-being and nurture the foundation of the children you love.

Mary Lou B. Johnson, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist with over 34 years experience working with children and their families at The Children’s Hospital, Denver. In her eBook, How To Help Your Child Learn to Talk Better in Everyday Activities, Mary Lou shares with readers the information, insights, and ideas that she has shared with parents in her practice. Mary Lou hopes that her eBook will enable a parent to gain new ideas and more confidence in her abilities to help her child acquire new speech-language skills. The reader can see the topics covered in the eBook by viewing the Table of Contents on the home page of the web site at http://helpyourchildspeak.com.

Of all the items I carry in my wallet, my Chicago public library card is the second most valuable — next to my driver’s license. Not only is the little green and white card the key to a world of possibilities; it is totally priceless. Let me tell you why.

1.Library cards are FREE. There are no fees, charges or taxes for owning the card. Just complete an application and provide proof of identity, a current address and Chicago residency.

2.Obtain a FREE education via books, periodicals, movies, museum passes, and other special perks offered by individual libraries. There is one main library, 76 neighborhood branches, and three regional facilities in the Chicago library system. Books can also be borrowed from suburban libraries according to the reciprocity policy. Therefore, this free education is very easy to obtain.

3.Accounts can be accessed online 24/7 with a valid library card for FREE. Records will show how many books that are checked out; when they are due; and any other information that is relevant to individual accounts.

4.Conduct research from home for FREE. Periodicals and other reference materials used for research can be found on the library’s website 24/7. There are only a couple resources that can only be found on the library databases; otherwise, all other research can be conducted remotely.

5.FREE Internet and WiFi are available at all libraries. Library cards are required for internet access; WiFi can be accessed through individual computers.

6.Gain FREE entry into most of Chicago museums with museum passes. Passes can be checked out for up to seven days. Although they do not allow entry into the extra attractions at museums, patrons can walk in for no charge.

7.After searching for books online, patrons can request to have books sent to the ANY library of their choice for FREE. Books can be delivered to a branch close to home or not.

8.Other benefits include FREE author discussions, exhibits and programs for individuals of all ages.

Although the library system offers lots of free stuff, patrons do have to pay late fees and any charges accrued for items checked out if a library card is lost or stolen. Fines range from $.20 a day for books and music up to $2 a day for movies and museum passes. Fortunately, there are maximum fines per item. Patrons won’t go broke unless they have a lot of items borrowed.

Essentially, getting a FREE library card; access to a FREE education via books, movies, and museum passes; and FREE computer access, WiFI and online research are totally priceless.

For those of us who love to read, who seek information, want a little time to sit reading a newspaper in the quiet, the Public Library system is where you want to go. Multnomah County Library is three blocks from where I live and you will find me there most days.

As a freelance writer, I find the library an invaluable resource center. Everything in the known world lives somewhere in a library. While I comb the pages of an encyclopedia, toddlers begin to arrive for story hour, herded into the Children’s Library by parents who know the value of learning and education.

Children are exposed to their peers, other adults beside parents and their first drills in manners and behavior. I took my children from the age of two-years. They were enthralled with the whole idea of excitement and movement. If your child is not quiet by nature, you might want to check the age limits that story hours accepts.

It is amazing what a library can bring you. Of course, the first is books, millions of books that they trust you to borrow. There is no fee for a library card, either juvenile or adult. You simply fill out a card at the checkout desk and the librarian will be glad to show how the system works. Libraries are very lenient about how many books you can check out at once, but it is always best to ask first. Remember, the books will still be there later, so be a polite library patron and do not take scores of books you may not have time to read.

The popular library is the section where casual reading is housed. You can find Koontz, Hawthorne and Dickinson within steps in any direction. Books are catalogued by writer for the most part. So it is easy to just go by the alphabetization of the shelves to find a writer you want to read.

My favorite section is the Large Print offerings. I see well, but read so much that these larger prints are so much easier on my eyes. There is the mystery section, another favorite, where you can find authors also by alphabetization. Try a new writer once in a while, to see what you might like that you hadn’t thought of before.

Most libraries now have movies to borrow. The trick to that is to use a machine and look up Feature Films. Every movie imaginable is listed there. . . most of the DVD’s now. But some VHS still linger in corners. These are the top movies out. They are not all documentaries or heavy subjects. I have borrowed “Pirates of the Caribbean”, “As Good as it Gets, every Johnny Depp film ever made, and many others. And these are FREE. You check them out on your library card as you would books.

There are also books in the library that stay in the library. These are research books from which you can find an amazing assortment of information. For instance, if you are a writer, you can borrow books that tell you places where you might send your work; both poetry and other writing.

Need to fix your Chevy? They have mechanics books. Love antiques? Check out the books on pricing produced by experts such as the Kovells. Want to learn to cook – the library has a plethora of cookbooks, ranging from gourmet to special diets. Every diet book on the market can be found in the library, so you could peruse several to see if they offer anything you might find helpful. Feng Shui? It’s at the library. Ancient Mayan basket weaving. . . you got it, the library.

You can ask questions that librarians will research for you. You can get help on a myriad of subjects – and all for free. The local library can be your best friend and your knowledge base.
